In my 18 years of life, there he been many things. University days are the best part of them. I can nr forget the days when I stepped into my university. I was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. I at once fell in love with it.

After the arduous military training, I get absoluy absorbed in my studies. The classes given by the teachers are excellent. They provide us with rmation not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. They easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as I can.

Frankly speaking, at first I had some difficulty following the teachers. Howr, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers' guidance, I made remarkable progress. Now I've benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.

At the beginning I was belittled by my colleagues. But they were really surprised when I translated sn English articles over 5,000 words on only one day. Gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. In their opinion I turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

I also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. So I often take part in activities concerning public welfare.

I once went to a barren mountain village with my clasates. We taught the kids there who could not afford school. While showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, I was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. I couldn't control my tears on the day when we left. The precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.

Besides study and social pract, there are entertainments as well. I do body building ry day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. We also write a play and put it on in our spare time.

Campus life is the most splendid time. But different people he different chos. The majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they'll become outstanding. But there are indeed some students still under ignorance. They gather toger for eating, drinking or playing cards. They're busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. They forget compley about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.

Finally, I do hope rybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. I do hope rybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!

The water is so pure and clear, you can count the pebbles, floating grass and fallen tree branches at the bottom. All the crystal-clear lakes he gorgeous colors, sometimes blue like sapphires or green like emeralds, and decorated with bright yellow touches.

When we are writing we are often told to keep our readers in mind, to shape what we say to fit their tastes and interests. But there is one reader in particular who should not be forgotten. Can you guess who? Russell Baker surprised himself and ryone else when he discovered the answer.

Writing for Myself

Russell Baker

1 The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the sibility took hold. Until then I've been bored by rything associated with English courses. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.

2 When our class was assigned to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English I anticipated another cheerless year in that most tedious of subjects. Mr. Fleagle had a reputation among students for dullness and ility to inspire. He was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date. To me he looked to be sixty or snty and excessively prim. He wore primly sre eyeglasses, his wy hair was primly cut and primly combed. He wore prim suits with neckties set primly against the collar buttons of his white shirts. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was so correct, so gentlemanly, that he seemed a comic antique.

3 I prepared for an unfruitful year with Mr. Fleagle and for a long time was not disappointed. Late in the year we tackled the rmal essay. Mr. Fleagle distributed a homework sheet offering us a cho of topics. None was quite so -minded as "What I Did on My Summer Vacation," but most seemed to be almost as dull. I took the list home and did nothing until the night before the essay was due. Lying on the sofa, I finally faced up to the unwelcome task, took the list out of my notebook, and scanned it. The topic on which my eye stopped was "The Art of Eating Spaghetti."

4 This title produced an extraordinary sequence of mental images. Vivid memories came flooding back of a night in Belleville when all of us were seated around the supper table — Uncle Allen, my mother, Uncle Charlie, Doris, Uncle Hal — and Aunt Pat served spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was still a little known foreign dish in those days. Neither Doris nor I had r eaten spaghetti, and none of the s had enough experience to be good at it. All the good humor of Uncle Allen's house reawoke in my mind as I recalled the laughing arguments we had that night about the socially respectable mod for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth.

5 Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr. Fleagle. It was a moment I wanted to recapture and hold for myself. I wanted to relive the pleasure of that ning. To write it as I wanted, howr, would violate all the rules of formal comition I'd learned in school, and Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade. Nr mind. I would write soming else for Mr. Fleagle after I had written this thing for myself.

7 "Now, boys," he said. "I want to read you an essay. This is titled, 'The Art of Eating Spaghetti.'"

8 And he started to read. My words! He was reading my words out loud to the entire class. What's more, the entire claOnce you get to the very top, you will find yourself at the Five-Color Pond, the eye of the Yellow Dragon. The suce ripples with baby blues and lush greens. The place is so dazzlingly unreal that people imagine it must be the place where goddesses come to beathe.ss was listening. Listening attentively. Then somebody laughed, then the entire class was laughing, and not in contempt and ridicule, but with open-hearted enjoyment. Even Mr. Fleagle stopped two or three times to hold back a all prim ile.

9 I did my best to oid showing pleasure, but what I was feeling was pure delight at this demonstration that my words had the power to make people laugh. In the elnth grade, at the elnth hour as it were, I had discovered a calling. It was the happiest moment of my entire school career. When Mr. Fleagle finished he put the final seal on my happiness by saying, "Now that, boys, is an essay, don't you see. It's — don't you see — it's of the very essence of the essay, don't you see. Congratulations, Mr. Baker."

Jiuzhaigou Valley is located in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Ethnic Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan Province. If you take a bird's eye view, you'll see it's shaped like the letter Y and stretches more than 40 kilometers. Nine nic Tibetan villages are scattered across the valley, so it's called Jiuzhaigou, or the nine-village-valley.

Even for those who he treled to many places in China, Jiuzhaigou is a pleasant surprise. Nerohem Yam from Israel is one example. The past few years he taken him to quite a few places of interest like Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Sha'anxi. But he fell in love with Jiuzhaigou's astonishing beauty at the very fi我尽力不流露出得意的心情,但是看到我写的文章竟然能使别人大笑,我真是心花怒放。 rst sight.

"This is the most beautiful place in China. Because the landscape is very unique, the water colors are soming exceptional, you don't see that in any other place in China."

The magic of Jiuzhaigou lies in the water, which is also where Jiuzhaigou's spirit resides. More than 100 alpine lakes of different sizes and brilliant colors are scattered in the valley.

Morishita Sadamasa, a tourist from Japan, can't gasping in adation.

"I he seen some videos of Jiuzhaigou's scenery back in Japan. But now that I'm here to see it in person, I find the view n more beautiful. There are lakes of the same kind in Japan, but I think Jiuzhaigou outstrips them all."

Jiuzhaigou's colorful waters come thanks to the conic karst landforms. The calcium, magnesium and carbonate ions abundant in the lake water are good at reflecting blue and green light. They also contain more than 200 types of algae in a variety of colors.

The lakes at Jiuzhaigou are located at different altitudes, creating the perfect environment for watells to form. The valley has 17 watells, including the 300-meter-wide Nuorilang Fall, the broadest single watell in China.

Little wonder the Chinese people call Jiuzhaigou Valley a faiand on earth! It was included on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 1992, but the local people he other reasons to take very good care of it.

A Tibetan girl, Yina Manhong, says the local Tibetans beli that rything inside the valley has been bestowed by divine powers.

"We local Tibetan people beli rything has a spirit and all those mountains and waters as well as trees and grasses are bestowed by the gods. We humans he ry reason to protect them, not to damage them. The older people will l their children not to wash clothes in the water or dise anything filthy."

Yina Manhong and her fellow villagers still live in Jiuzhaigou Valley as their ancestors taught them to. They are friends with the natural world and hospitable to trelers who pass by.

One dred thirty kilometers away from Jiuzhaigou Valley is another "Paradise on Earth," the Huanglong Park. It was included on the World Natural Heritage List in 1992, the same year as Jiuzhaigou Valley.

The Huanglong Park sprawls over 700 square kilometers and is surrounded by damp forests, mountains, coniferous woods and grasslands.

The region's big attraction is the karst formations that suce in the form of limestone pools, shoals and trertine falls.

People probably call this place Huanglong, or Yellow Dragon, because of the rock formations, which are just like yellow scales on the back of a gigantic dragon. The water is crystal clear and contains all kinds of minerals, drawn from the limestone mountain behind it. Each all pool displays heartbreakingly beautiful colors that would defy any painter's palette.

If you want to see the most charming part of Huanglong Park, you he to be on the mountaintop. It's three thousand meters above sea ll and a non-stop walk from the bottom to the top takes about an hour. Altoger, it's a sn-kilometer uphill climb. The exertion can be a problem for many people. Kou Yahui, who is in charge of Huanglong Park, says they've found a solution to the problem.

"We now he tourist chair lifts, so trelers can take them to the mountaintop for sightseeing. We've also set up five cost-free oxygen bars for hikers along the way to the peak. They are totally free for trelers."

Joy in living comes from hing fine emotions, trusting them, giving them the of a bird in the open. Joy in living can nr be assumed as a e, or put on from the outside as a mask. People who he this joy don not need to talk about it; they radiate it. They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight and glow into other lives as naturally as bird sings.

We can nr get it by working for it directly. It comes, like happiness, to those who are aiming at soming higher. It is a byproduct of great, living. The joy of living comes from what we put into living, not from what we seek to get from it.

The Princess and the Pea

One ning a terrible storm came on; there was tder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.

Well, we'll soon find that out, thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

"Oh, very badly!" said she. "I he scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heen only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on soming hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It's horrible!"

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.

6 When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to come a proper, respectable essay for Mr. Fleagle. There was no cho next morning but to turn in my tale of the Belleville supper. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the graded s, and he returned ryone's but mine. I was preparing myself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediay after school for discipline when I saw him lift my from his desk and knock for the class's attention. There, that is a true story.
